The Wind Quintet was composed using classical sonata form as a basis for a more modern tonal and rhythmic palette.
The first movement begins with a lively melodic motif, first heard in the bassoon, which is passed around the other instruments throughout the movement.
The second movement opens with a quiet flute melody, which builds slowly using a lyrical line consisting of wide melodic intervals.
The third movement, Vivace, is a fun, lively dance using bitonality and shifting metres. The piece ends with a humorous nod.
This wind quintet was composed for the 4th International Composers Symposium at Viktorsberg (Austria) in 1995.
